Cling film - PVC CLING FILM is a generic term used to describe a number of different materials. Cling film usually refers to industrial cling film or food grade cling film used to hold trays in place. Food wrap is a thin plastic film that is typically used to seal and secure food in containers to maintain freshness. Food wrap is sold in individual rolls or, more typically, in boxes with cut edges along with the rolls.
Cling film was discovered in 1933 when a Dow Chemical laboratory worker (Ralph Wiley) had trouble cleaning a beaker used to develop a dry cleaning product. The product was originally developed as a spray to be applied to fighter planes to protect them from the effects of waves. The original cling film was invented as PVdC (polyvinylidene chloride) and in 1949 Dow Chemical modified the spray and developed the cling film.
Cling film is usually made from PVC (polyvinylidene chloride). In recent years, other PVC alternatives have become increasingly popular. The most popular choice in recent years has been LDPE (low density polyethylene) as it is considered safer for the body. the problem with LDPE cling film is that it does not provide the amount of adhesion that PVC CLING FILM can provide.
How is cling film made?
The plastic pellets are heated until they melt. The liquid is then forced through a mould to form a stretchable plastic tube.
Compressed air is blown into the tube to form air bubbles. The air bubbles stretch the plastic to the desired thickness. The bubbles collapse between metal rolls to form a plastic film.
The film is then rolled onto a large metal roll that can hold several kilometres of film. From the large roll, the cling film is unrolled, cut and re-rolled into smaller rolls.
The rolling and unrolling of the cling film helps to provide more adhesion. These rolls are then placed in cardboard containers with serrated edges or individually wrapped for the end user.
How thick is cling film?
Most store-bought cling film is 35 ga to 40 ga.
Can I use PVC CLING WRAP in a microwave oven?
Yes, cling film can be used in a microwave oven. It is recommended that users poke holes in the wrap before using it in the microwave. Cling film should not come into contact with high fat foods. If heated to a high enough temperature, the fat can melt the wrap.
Can I use PVC FILM FOOD PACK SERVICE in the oven?
No, cling film should not be used in conventional ovens, stovetops or toaster ovens. If used in these cooking machines, the plastic will melt.
Can cling film be used to freeze food?
Yes, cling film can be used to protect food in the freezer. It is recommended that there is no air between the wrap and the food. This will help protect the food from freezer burn. For long term storage, it is recommended to use a bag with a zip.
Is cling film a good insulator?
No, cling film does not have many qualities that make it an excellent insulator. It may help slightly with insulation, but aluminium foil is a better insulator. If necessary, two layers of cling film with air between them is the best way to use cling film as an insulator.
Can I use industrial cling film with consumables?
Industrial cling film should not be used in direct contact with consumables. Industrial stretch wrap is not approved by the FDA for direct contact with food.
Can cling film be heated?
Standard food wrap should not be heated in an oven or used in other forms of direct heating. Regular PVC CLING FILM can be heated in a microwave oven, but not in an oven. It is not recommended to heat food wrap unless it is stated on the product that it can be used in the oven or microwave. Untreated cling film will release chemicals and melt when heated.
